Vowel Perception and Production of Late Turkish Learners of L2 German
نویسنده
چکیده
The objective of this study was to test whether quantity and/or quality distinctions are problematic for Turkish learners acquiring L2 German. The perception and production of the German long/short vowel pairs /i:/-//, /a:/-/a/, and /u:/-// by a group of Turkish high school learners of L2 German were compared to an age-matched control group of German native speakers. The results of both the perception and the production experiment show that quality rather than quantity is the difficult feature for Turkish learners to acquire. Further, orthography seems to play an important role. For reasons of comparison, data on the production of the corresponding Turkish short vowels were collected as well. The results show clearly that the Turkish learners transfer the quality of their Turkish vowels to their production of German vowels.

Enhanced musical rhythmic perception in Turkish early and late learners of German
As language rhythm relies partly on general acoustic properties, such as intensity and duration, mastering two languages with distinct rhythmic properties (i.e., stress position) may enhance musical rhythm perception. We investigated whether competence in a second language (L2) with different rhythmic properties than a L1 affects musical rhythm aptitude. Turkish early (TELG) and late learners (...
متن کاملVowel perception and production in Turkish children acquiring L2 German
Previous studies Influence of L1 categories is said to be less strong in early learners as compared to late learners: Less foreign accent, better production, better perception (1, 2); they are just like monolinguals (8) in some tasks. The influence of L1 might be more variable in early learners (3, 4) because in children, phonetic categories are still in formation (9). But it is sometimes still...
متن کاملPerception of French speakers' German vowels
Despite some similarities in their inventories, German and French exhibit marked differences in the vowel systems. Most notably, German uses both tenseness and length to differentiate vowels, whereas in French, vowel length is not distinctive. Therefore, interferences can be expected when French native speakers learn to speak German. Results of a vowel judgment experiment with vowels in minimal...
متن کاملProduction and perception of a novel, second-language phonetic contrast.
Four experiments, all of which focused on vowel duration, assessed Chinese subjects' production and perception of the contrast between /t/ and /d/ in the final position of English words. Vowel duration was measured in minimal pairs in the first experiment. The stimuli in natural-edited beat-bead and bat-bad continua in which vowel duration varied in 20-ms steps were then presented to native Eng...
متن کاملOn the effects of L2 perception and of individual differences in L1 production on L2 pronunciation
The speech of late second language (L2) learners is generally marked by an accent. The dominant theoretical perspective attributes accents to deficient L2 perception arising from a transfer of L1 phonology, which is thought to influence L2 perception and production. In this study we evaluate the explanatory role of L2 perception in L2 production and explore alternative explanations arising from...
